Medicinal Plant Trail: Our medicinal plant trail identifies over 100 different trees, vines, and ferns that have been used since Mayan times for traditional holistic uses.  It is amazing to learn about where the many synthetic drugs we regularly take are derived. It is even more amazing to learn about the story of a former employee’s cervical cancer battle and her recovery following a treatment with a plant found growing on the many Cahoon Palm trees at Lower Dover and throughout Belize.  Further fun facts about the Belize’s past in the rubber and chicle industry are sure to fascinate. The 80 jungle acres of untouched jungle are a site to see and we are happy to protect its pristine state for future generations to enjoy!

Lower Dover Mayan Ruins: Our Mayan Ruin trail intersects the 15+ plazas and multiple unexcavated structures overlooking the Belize River on the site named “Lower Dover”.  The tallest of these structures is 36 feet, and many others are over 25 feet. The site is believed to be a royal ceremonial center, where nobility conducted and regulated trade along the Belize River valley. It is a major discovery and more will be officially announced as concrete information becomes available during further dig seasons.  The site is adjacent from the much studied housing settlement of Barton Ramie on the opposite side of the Belize River. The jungle was so thick we didn’t even know how big some of the ruins were and we have lived here for 25 years! so it is very understandable why Harvard archaeologists Gordon Willey did not find the site during the 1950’s when he was digging nearby.
Further work by Gifford and Garber need to be completely reexamined in light of the recent discoveries at Lower Dover Field Station.

Swimming:  Lower Dover is blessed with water on three sides of its property. Belize River swimming is a wonderful experience when water levels permit during the dry season.  The water is curiously warm, birds are flying everywhere, and relaxation is a given. Nearer to the Jungle Lodge, Little Barton Creek provides multiple natural swimming holes, each with their own cascading waterfalls, which flow year round, but are more vibrant during the rainy season. The creek is a great place to swim and cool off after a sweaty day of tours or hiking around Lower Dover.

Bird-watching: Belize is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 500 different species of native and migratory birds. With 100 acres of mixed habitat, Lower Dover offers a wonderful opportunity to see numerous species. We have over fifty fruit trees of different varieties that supplement the “fruit” found on much of the native bush vegetation.

As you can see from our logo, birds are part of the experience you will have while staying with us. It is common to see various species of parakeets, yellow headed parrots, and even the famous toucan. Our philosophy is “a little fruit for us, a little for them, and a little to sell”.

Photography: No matter if its birds, plants, or ruins, Lower Dover provides many opportunities for photo opportunities for all skill levels of photographers. Birds come to you and the topical colors pop in the camera. By no means are we pros, yet we have had great success getting great shots for our blog. Bring your camera and try your luck at getting a great shot that we can use for our website and your bar tab is on us for the night!

Pool Table / Darts: Lower Dover Jungle Lodge sports a full sized pool table and professional dart board for our guests entertainment when enjoying a drink and relaxing in the evenings.

Organic Farm: Lower Dover Jungle Lodge is also a working organic farm. We have 50+ mature fruit trees, grow multiple varieties of local vegetables, free range chickens, turkeys, and ducks, and a flock of sheep. Come see our farming operation at work!

Stargazing: For many of our guests that live in cities, coming to Lower Dover Jungle Lodge provides amazing opportunities to see the stars like they have never seen before.  It is not uncommon to see multiple shooting stars every hour, blinking satellites, and the brightest “stars”  Venus and Jupiter. The full moon is also amazingly vibrant, and it is capable of illuminating the entire Jungle Lodge at night to the point where it is almost unnecessary to carry a flashlight in order to see where you are walking. In contrast, the new moon offers total darkness when it is possible to view the huge swath of the Milky Way Galaxy overhead, stretching all the way across the sky.
