Lower Dover

Newly Discovered Maya site “Lower Dover”
Each summer during the months of June and July Lower Dover Field Station closes to the public in order to accommodate international students participating in the annual Belize Valley Archaeology Reconnaissance Project (BVAR) field school under the guidance of Dr. Jamie Awe. Since 2010 the Lower Dover Field Station has housed upwards of 16 students each week with plans to accommodate more as Lower Dover becomes the focus of BVAR field work in the near future.

While the site “Lower Dover” remains unexcavated,  it is still possible to sense the scale of building that was present within the settlement. There are multiple groups of structures with the largest building being over 11m tall or 35 feet! Structures are still being uncovered to this day, as the jungle has done very well to protect the Maya’s secrets.

2012 is a very exciting year for the entire Mayan culture and people worldwide. The highlight is when the 13th Bak-tun calendar cycle completes in December.  Lower Dover will be host to many special events during the whole year to celebrate this once in a lifetime happening… in our backyard!
